The Bright Side of the Pukey Side

Colton has been sick with a stomach bug this past week. In addition to puking a dozen or so times, the little guy has also had a running nose and just generally felt yucky.

While of course having a sick baby is not desirable (as it causes frequent night wakings, fussier days and lots of dirty clothes) it does have some perks.

Colton has been much more cuddly this week. All he's wanted to do is lay on me and rest his head on my shoulder while he sucks his thumb. It's so precious.

Then, whenever he crawls away from me and decides he's too far he's been saying "ah ma" "ah ma" and looking at me to come get him. Oh, just melts my heart.

By Friday, Colton seemed a lot better. He hadn't thrown up all day. But then after we put him to bed, he woke up crying a few hours later, so I nursed him and put him back to bed. Then an hour after that he woke up crying again. I went to check on him and tried to console him but he just wouldn't calm down. I tried putting him back in his bed but he kept crying (which isn't like him, he generally sleeps through the night and if he wakes up he always goes back to sleep after being nursed.)

After my attempts at getting him to fall back asleep failed, Casey took a stab at it. Nope, that didn't work either. So a bit later I went in and decided to see if he might want something more substantial to eat, since he'd been going easy on solids the last couple days.

About 3 a.m. Colton and I (who was cheerful once I removed him from his crib) went into the kitchen where I fed him a few bites of bread. A couple minutes later, we were both covered in yuckiness. I guess his tiny tummy wasn't better just yet.

After that we went back to his room to change his pajamas and clean him up. While he was laying on his diaper changing pad, waiting for me to get his clothes on him again, he looked up at me with sleepy eyes and said, "Mama."

Awww, that's worth getting puked on at 3 a.m.

(*This pictures aren't from this week. They're from Christmas.)

I will get puked on any day of the week if my kids will just cuddle up with me and believe (even if for only a few minutes) that I am the best thing that has ever happened to them.

Nothing sweeter than hearing your baby call you Mama. He takes your heart with him everywhere he goes. A mighty fine gift from heaven with the cool name of Colton Luke.
