This morning I was trying to catch a few more snorts of shut eye before the little one began cock-a-doodle dooing. And as I slept, I had this dream:
I was in a car parked along the side of the road near the ocean. I was standing up in the backseat (even though the car was a sedan and I'm not 3 feet tall). Casey then appeared at the partially rolled down car window. He was holding a very large, very strange sea creature. It had the smooth velvety skin and 'wings' of a sting ray but the face of a seal. It's eyes were like a baby bird's that hadn't open yet (all swollen and dark). It could also stick out it's tongue, which it did as it thrust it's creepy head in the car to greet me.
Casey tried to assure me that the creature was friendly and get me to touch it, but I wasn't having it. In attempt to get him to take it away, I inquired after the animal's safety. 'Didn't it need to go back in the water soon?' That line of arguement didn't prevail in the removal of the beast, so I scooted over to the driver's side of the backseat.
But what do you know? As soon as I got over there the formerly-floppy sea creature was laying on the ground looking pretty dead. I then yelled out to Casey something like, "You said you'd put it back in the water before it died!" At this point, Casey had transformed into our old yellow lab, Caddis. Caddis was a rather ornery dog who could definitely not be counted on to return a seal-ray to the water before it's demise. In vain, I urged Caddis to take care of the sickly sea monster, but she just wagged her tail and ran around ignoring me.
Then I was awoken by the sounds of my little one stirring. So, I may never know if the seal-ray perished or whether my husband is in fact a yellow labrador.
