Today, I decided to eat something different for lunch, so I went to the local gyro shack on NW Expressway. After ordering the basic gyro combo meal, the Greek girl working inside the little hut (I assume she’s Greek – aren’t gyros Greek?) asked me what I wanted to drink with my meal. I said something without caffeine, to which she suggested Mountain Dew and root beer. Knowing Mountain Dew was far from caffeine free and not really in the mood for beer made from roots, I paused a moment. Just then an older (presumably Greek) man with a scruffy voice popped up to the drive-thru window. He informed me that he had just made a fresh batch of mango juice. And, this was not just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill-gyro-shack mango juice either. He had just shaved (?) the mangos moments ago, and the juice's sugar wasn’t regular table sugar but mango sugar! So, I gleefully selected mango juice for my beverage. However, when I got my total, it was $2 more than the combo meal’s original price. I thought of saying something (aren’t people from other countries used to haggling?) But, I remained silent and simply signed my credit card receipt. While I waited for the young woman and older man to get my food ready, I heard them speaking in another language (again I assumed Greek.) I don’t know for sure, but I’m thinking they might’ve been saying something like, “Ha, Ha Athena! That foolish girl just paid $2 too much for her Dixie cup of mango juice.” “I know PaPa. She must be very naïve to not bargain with us.” Anyway, the freshly-shaved mango juice with mango sugar was very tasty, but maybe next time I’ll try to get them to include it in the combo meal price or give me a discount . . . or not.

Sounds yummy!! You silly American girl!
Come on, Summer. I'd say you got a deal. The last time I shaved a mango, I charged $5.
Your blog is fun to read...
Ah man, Kim - I'm definetly gonna have to do some serious haggling if I go to your gyro shack!
