Riddles for Hobbitses

Last week, we rented the 1977 Hobbit cartoon. I always loved this movie growing up. There's a lot of memorable songs "Smash the cups and crack the plates. That's what Bilbo Baggins hates."

It also has some of the cool riddles from the Hobbit book.

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Without Googling, does anyone know the answer?
