At the Easter festivities at my in-laws' house, we played a rousing game of Balderdash. You know the game - you read a word and then everyone makes up definitions for it and then the group votes on which one they think is real. Some of the words were pretty funny. So, I'm going to share a couple of the words and their real and fake defintions (as I remember them) and see how you do.
Shaftesbury:
A. A dish of lamb and gravy served in parts of England
B. A faulty beam in a mine
C. Pottery sold in New England in the 1900s
D. An English statesman
E. A wide-brimmed hat with feathers
Xat:
A. A loophole during April tax season
B. A carved totem pole of various North American Indian people
C. Criminal behavior
D. Skin tags growing on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands
E. A device used to measure seismic activity
Got your answers ready? Here's a hint - both times I voted for answer E and was wrong (Darn Dad and Casey tripping me up!)
Drumroll . . . The correct definition of Shaftesbury is D. And the definition of Xat is none other B. I thought E. was a great answer but my brother ripped me hard on it. "Ladies and gentleman as you can see on the Xat, San Francisco has just been hit by a powerful earthquake." Can you pick which definitions you think I wrote?

I still have a great memory of playing Balderdash with Quentin and Izzy. Upon hearing the correct definition of cran (750 herring), Quentin quipped, "748... 749... and, cran!" Quentin was really fun to play Balderdash with.
I like the new version with movie plots. A few of them that Jared's sisters made up were so hilarious that they ended up tacked on our fridge for about a year.
I love this game. But I'm really bad at it. I do better as the girl who just laughs at everyone to build their self-esteem...
Quentin is a hoot! Oh and by the way, Xat is prounounced Zat. Just in case anyone was wondering.
hahhaa i LOVE balderdash! jimmy and i got it for christmas and are always looking for people to play it with. game night soon?
ok, so i got shaftesbury right, but not xat. i'm going to guess you said c - pottery in new england for shaft and d - soles of feet answer for xat. am i right??
Very good Marisa :) You've got me pegged! I don't know if I can play Balderdash with you now - you'll figure me out every time!
