How to Not Play It Cool in Orlando

I'm back from my whirlwind tour of Orlando! Or, more appropriately my tour of the conference hotel.

It was a good three days though. I listened to PR practitioners who worked for Wal-Mart, Dove, Darden restaurants and Disney. On Thursday night, my co-workers and I went to a networking reception at Epcot. The reception was at an aquarium, and we got to watch sharks, fish and a giant sea turtle swim during the evening. Then, we headed to the center of the park to watch the night's firework show.
When people found out we were from Oklahoma, they kept telling us how much we were going to like the fireworks show. One woman even said she was going to watch our faces instead of the fireworks because she was sure we'd be really impressed. Of course, being from Oklahoma we all felt the need to play it cool and not act like a bunch of yokels who'd never seen fireworks. Before the fireworks started, I got my cool, calm and collected face on, but then as soon as the first ones exploded in the sky, my eyes opened wide and my mouth gaped. I jumped and backed away from their brightness. So, I'm sorry my dear Oklahoma friends if I let on how impressed I was. I really wanted to show that we Okies have seen it all, but sometimes you've just gotta smile and laugh and act like a surprised kid.

That night at Epcot we also got to go on a couple of rides. One was the Test Track where we raced around crashing into walls and turning sharp corners. Again, I didn't keep my game face on. From the moment the ride took off, I was screaming my head off. The next ride was Mission: Space a virtual reality ride that takes you on a voyage to Mars. I was a little calmer on this one, but still rather excitable.

On my flight back to Oklahoma City, I got to meet a couple of interesting people. I sat by two brothers age 14 and 8. The 14 year old was really friendly, and it turns out he knows Ethan Rehrig from Christian Heritage Academy. It was cute to see them try and impress me by telling me interesting things about their lives back home. I also appreciated the 14 year old's seeming innocence. He had a dinosaur maze book and told me how he missed his kitties. He'd also been to Epcot and admitted that some of the rides scared him and his brother. It was nice to see a kid who was going into high school but was still okay with just being a kid. Maybe he gasped at the fireworks and yelped on the Test Track too.

There's nothing wrong with being impressed by fireworks. I get excited about them every year! Even here in little old Oklahoma... I'm glad you found some thrills!

I think his name was Carter and that his little brother's name was Connor. They were definitely both "C" names. He was tall, had blond hair and played basketball. His mom is also a teacher at CHA. Oh and they live in Edmond. Maybe with that information Ethan can figure out who I met. :)

Carter Champion? If that's the same kid, he lives on the street around the corner from me. I used to teach him piano lessons. It's a small world after all!... Everybody...it's a small world after all! It's a small world after all! It's a small world after all. It's a small, small world!!!!!

I don't know what his last name was. Maybe Tara can find out from Ethan.
