Currently reading . . . A Girl of the Limberlost

My mom recently let me borrow a bunch of her favorite old books. I took the entire Little House on the Prairie Series and a few other books with similiar American history appeal. The one I'm currently reading is called A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter.

I'm only about half way through, but so far I'm thinking this book may replace Jane Eyre as my favorite novel. It's got everything I love in book - history, nature, strong herione, good values. The protaganist is Elnora a determined teenager whose character has been strenghtned through hard work and hard knocks.

The setting is the Limberlost forest in Indiana around the turn of the century. Elnora pays her way through school by collecting the rare and beautiful moths, arrowheads and birds' nest of her native forest. She is quick to forgive and love and works hard for everything she gets. I can't wait to read more of Porter's novels. Apparently, at the time of her death, she was one of the most popular writers in America.

The picture I posted with this article isn't the same cover as the one I'm reading, but Amazon didn't have that one, so I posted the one I liked best out of the selection. But, I like my copy's artwork best because it's a really beatiful drawing of Elnora with her auburn hair glistening in the sun as she reaching out for a multi-colored moth.
